Text Appearing Before Image:
nce de Joinville andthe Princess Clementine. On arriving there theQueen, Marie Amelie, seized both my hands andbegan speaking to me in broken English, but shewas reminded by her son that I spoke Frenchfluently, when she exclaimed, II me fait un plaisirde vous voir. Ah ! ca me rappelle le bon vieuxtemps. Both my pupils had married since I lastsaw them in Paris. The Princess had become theDuchess of Saxe-Coburg, and the Prince de Joinvillewith pride showed me his children, mounting themon chairs to do so. The drawing lessons continueduntil the spring, when the Princess returned toGermany. In the early autumn I visited Richmond inYorkshire, and made numerous excursions for thepurpose of sketching, and afterwards went toManchester to see the Art Treasures Exhibition, and then to Chester, a delightfully interesting city, with endless new objects for my pencil. In thenext year, 1854, I made a tour in Normandy, ST. MARYS CHURCH, RICHMOND, YORKSHIRE—BEFORE RESTORATION (Size 20h x 13J inches.)
Text Appearing After Image:
IN LONDON 109 accompanied as usual by my wife; we went viaDieppe, taking the diligence to Lisieux, Caen, andHavre, and then by steamer up the Seine to Rouen. On return to England I was shocked to hear of thedeath of my old friend and fellow - pupil CharlesBentley, from cholera, after only a few hours illness. It was a great grief to me, as he had been a true companion from the earliest period of our acquaint-ance when we worked together under the Fieldings. During these years I was still very successful inselling my drawings at the Societys Exhibitions, besides receiving numerous commissions. I wasalso enabled to raise my prices, and I received onehundred and twenty guineas for a drawing ofVenice at the Liverpool Exhibition.
