and stronglyribbed leaves are stemless, or nearly so, and alter-nate at the angles of the stalk. The margins are tooth-less, but are fringed with fine hairs. The surface,particularly beneath, is also hairy. The small, whiteor greenish-white flowers are fragrant, and have sixspreading, petal-like parts, six pale, yellow-tippedstamens, and a thick pistil. These are densely crowdedin a pyramid-shaped spike at the end of the stalk, whichis often gracefully curved. The flowers are suc-ceeded by the aromatic, purple-specked berries, whichare at first green, then yellow-white, and finally palered. The plant blossoms from May to July, and isfound in moist woods and thickets, from Nova Scotiato Georgia, and westward to Missouri, Arizona, andBritish Columbia. FALSE LILY OF THE VALLEY.
