the tip of the pistil opens withthree little hooks. There is a faint fragrance to theflowers when they first open, but it is not always con-stant. The Claytonia was named for an early Amer-ican botanist, John Clayton of Virginia, who collectedmany plants and sent them to Gronovius, the editorof the Flora Virginica. The Spring Beauty isfound from Nova Scotia to the Northwest Territoryand southward to Georgia and Texas. There isvery little chance of confusing this flower withthose of either of the Anemones. Just rememberthat the Spring Beauty has very long and narrowleaves shaped like grass blades, and the stems ofthe Anemones are thin and wiry. SWEET=SCENTED WHITE WATER LILY.POND LILY. WATER NYMPH Casialia odorata. Water Lily Family. There is scarcely another flower that loses so muchof its spectacular charm and magnificent splendouras the beautiful Water Lily when it is removed from itsnatural element.
