s that a pair of Cockatoos made a nest inone of the boxes hung against a gable of the house,and the hen bird sat till September, but the eggswere addled. On several other occasions the Cockatoos nestedwith successful results, but most of the birds onstraying from home got shot. Afterwards a pair of Green Parrots nested in abox and brought up one young one, but whennearly fledged it was murdered by one of theparents. The next year the same pair brought uptwo young ones, and it was a beautiful sight tosee this family party flying about, always together,and on the most loving terms, but the motherbird and one of the young ones were both un-happily shot. Mr. C. Buxton narrates the following anecdote,showing the maternal instinct of a pair of GreyParrots:— A cat made her lodging in one of thenest-boxes and brought up her kittens in it, andtwo of the Grey Parrots who had not been in-dustrious enough to lay eggs and have a family oftheir own were seized with the idea that these riatr VIII.

Tliey kept up a con-stant warfare with the old cat, and whenever sheleft the box one of them used to get in and sit withthe kittens and they were constantly in close atten-dance even when the mother cat was at home. The spectacle of the Parrots breakfast when thesnow was on the ground is one which Mr. C. Buxtondescribes as of exquisite beauty, the colours of thebirds seeming peculiarly gorgeous. It is thusdescribed:—The Parrots breakfast having been putin a basket, a pair of White Cockatoos, who hadbeen anxiously watching the proceedings from thetree above, swooped down and set instantly to work.A Bengal Paraquet with long, green wings presentlycomes skimming up and flutters for a few minutesalmost perpendicularly in the air, exactly in theattitude so often represented by Mr. Gould in hisbook of Humming Birds, with the head and tailcurved inwards and the wings extended.
