wk Owl, Tengmalms Owl, Smew, Goosander,and Red-breasted Merganser are all consideredmore or less as intruders, and they frequently evictthe rightful owners from the nest boxes and takeup residence in them themselves. I have thought it well to give these interestingobservations made by Mr. Sutton Davies to showwhat has been done, no doubt for generations, inSwedish Lapland, in order to encourage birds of theduck tribe to nest, although, of course, not so muchwith the desire to protect these birds and theirbroods, as to obtain their eggs for food. These careful observations show us how easilyeven some of our rarest birds might be induced tobreed with us in suitable localities if appropriatenest boxes were provided for their use. Tlien we read in the Second Series of those mostinteresting Essays on Natural History, by thelate Charles Waterton, of that safe Retreat andAsylum for Wild Birds wliicli he so successfullyestablished in his Park at Walton in Yorkshire, and NESTING BOXES, ETC. 37
