Text Appearing Before Image:
Fig. 10. — Nesting Box, made from a section of a branch, and successfully adopted at Rosehill, Cheadle. This form of box, if hollowed out for its entirelength, may be utilized as a double box withdivision in the middle and a lid or door at bothends. Fastened outside the lid or door a smallperch should be placed, upon which the birdsmay alight when entering or leaving the nest. Agreat advantage in this c^dindrical form of nesting riritr TIT.
Text Appearing After Image:
Im; WiiKNs WiNTii: s iii:i.TKi; NESTING BOXES, ETC. 47 box is that it may be so easily wedged in the forkof a tree (see Plate iii.) and, to make quitesecure* in case of gales, a nail or two may beused as well. Generally it may be said that almost any strongrough boxes of the right sizes may be utilized for thepurpose of birds nest boxes. One of my correspon-dents states that he uses the cartridge boxes, whichare obtained from the gunmakers, for this purpose;those boxes containing one hundred cartridgesmaking good Tit boxes, and those containing twohundred being large enough for Jackdaws, and ifcovered with bark or virgin cork no doubt theseboxes will answer well. I have read of cigar boxesbeing recommended as boxes for Tits, but I shouldbe much afraid that they are of too flimsy a characterto withstand the rain and gales. For the accommodation of the Spotted Flycatcher(Muscicapa grisola), one of our most useful birds, and whose favourite nesting places are perhaps aledge against a wall
