Summary

[edit]
Description Monarda fistulosa. Family: Lamiaceae (commonly known as the mint family). Grows in grasslands, meadows, and open forest; from plains and valleys to montane zones. This aromatic herbaceous perennial has a long history and wide variety of ethnobotanical uses. For example, the Blackfoot made a tea from the flowers and leaves to cure stomach pains. The Hocak (Winnebago) used the plant in their sweat baths and inhaled the fumes to cure colds. The Cherokee made a warm poultice of the plant to relieve headaches. This plant also offers rich nectar to a large diversity of pollinators, including butterflies, hummingbirds, bees, and more! It would be an excellent addition to any native pollinator garden!
