Description
English: A warm and dry September across much of Australia created an environment ripe for bushfires in the fire-prone Australian outback. A month after the start of spring, fires raged across the Northern Territory, Queensland, and Western Australia.

On October 27, 2023, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image centered on Northern Territory, where numerous active bushfires—each marked by a red “hot spot”—were blazing and producing heavy smoke. Additional large bushfires burned in Queensland, to the east of Northern Territory while smoke shrouded Western Australia.

The silver tones in the northeast are not related to fire, but are caused by “sunglint”, which is an optical phenomenon that occurs when sunlight reflects off the surface of water at the same angle that a satellite sensor views it. The result is a mirror-like reflection of sunlight off the water and back at the satellite sensor or astronaut.
