An Airship in flight

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: An airship or a balloon obtains its lift in exactly the same way as a ship. The envelope of the balloon displaces some air and therefore there is an upward force acting on the balloon which is equal to the weight of the displaced air. If the weight of the displaced air is equal to the weight of the balloon, the balloon will float in the air, if the weight of the displaced air is greater than the weight of the balloon, the balloon will rise in the air. Air does not weigh very much, so you can see why the envelope of the airship or balloon has to be so big, it has to displace a large quantity of air to equal its weight, Fig 3. The R100 and R101 each had a capacity of over five million cubic feet.
