Summary
[edit]DescriptionWhitwell Station - an overgrown track - geograph.org.uk - 1255635.jpg |
English: Whitwell Station - an overgrown track This is the short track leading from Whitwell Road to the cattle platform at Whitwell Station where cattle once used to be gathered, ready to be loaded and transported. On clearing the platform of vegetation and trees that had grown through it, it was discovered that the cattle dock was still intact. It will be fully cleared and restored in due time.
In 1882 two railway stations opened at Reepham and Whitwell - Whitwell station, having formed part of the Norwich City to Melton Constable leg of the M&GN which ran for a total of 21.5 miles, was closed in 1959. After years of lying derelict it was acquired by the newly formed Whitwell & Reepham Railway Preservation Society Limited with the aim of restoring the station, acquiring rolling stock and to set up a museum. By September 2008 130 metres of track had been laid and with work still ongoing, the station was re-opened to the public in February 2009 on occasion of the 50th anniversary of the closure of the M&GN (Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway). From end of March onwards weekends we will be open from 10am to 6pm - with steam engine 'Annie' running every first Sunday from midday onwards - and coffee, tea and some food will be served. http://www.whitwellstation.com/default.asp |
