| Description | A Class 47 approaches Whittlingham Junction on the outskirts of Norwich with a train to Great Yarmouth on a summer Saturday some time during the late 1990s. The Mark II carriages on the London-Norwich Great Eastern Mainline have gone (though many are still in traffic elsewhere) but Class 47s still work services between Norwich and Great Yarmouth - substituting for DMUs, and also on the summer Saturday trains from London Liverpool St. to Great Yarmouth which are extended from Norwich. This photo is of a London set, but unusually the electric loco which is normally attached to the set is absent (it would normally be left on the train for the return journey to Great Yarmouth). I think this may have been because London trains were being diverted via the non electrified route via Cambridge on this day. |
