Summary

[edit]
Description Though the town has declined from its peak and is nothing like it once was, people still live in Whittier, and it still maintains some local institutions, including two churches, a post office, and a small community center. This Gothic Revival-Style stone building is home to the Whittier Missionary Baptist, and was constructed during the 1920s or 1930s to replace an earlier wood-frame church that stood at the center of the town’s business district on the Swain County side of the Tuckaseigee River. The church, one of the more notable buildings in town, had a cinderblock addition added to the rear in the mid-20th Century, and sits prominently at the end of the bridge that connects the two halves of the town.
