Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Whitestone Cliff from Car Lane Also known as White Mare Crag, there's a legend that a horse and rider leapt off the precipice to certain doom.

The cliff is subject to continual minor rock falls and sometimes large blocks fall away. A major landslip in the distant past is the likely explanation for the hollow in which nearby Lake Gormire sits.

The escarpment is in fact still unstable following the last ice age. It's believed the ice filled the area between the Moors and Peninnes to many hundreds of feet deep, gouging into the higher ground here.

Glacial retreat was quite sudden, leaving an un-naturally steep slope for the local geology - to this day it is still slowly stabilising itself, by losing material from the steeper sections.
