English: Whitefish Island Fishing Station
Whitefish Island is a historic Ojibwa fishing station. Until about 1920 an immense whitefishery existed at the rapids. Attikamek meaning caribou of the waters in Ojibwa was a year round food source. The whitefish was smoked and dried for winter months and used as trade items with other tribes. Ojibwa fishers were profiled in history books for their unique method and skill at catching fish in the rapids. Two men in a birchbark canoe: one steering through the swirling rapids and the other standing would dip a net into the rushing waters and gather the catch into the canoe. It was noted a skilled fisher could accumulate up to 500 pounds in 2 hours. Today the rich fishing grounds are gone destroyed by the lock construction, compensating dams, hydro development and industrialization along the St. Mary's River. |
