Description
English: Historical Significance

Whitefish Island is a remarkable place. There is an opportunity to explore the trails and learn about the history of the region and the Anishnabe who walked this land. Archaeological studies done on the island in 1976 identified unique plants, flora and fauna and over 100,000 artifacts were recovered such as pottery, tools etc. The collection is presently stored by the Ministry of Culture in Thunder Bay. The study concluded: an unbroken chain of occupation, an ongoing network of trade with other tribes, extensive evidence of net fishing and the involvement in the native copper industry. On April 6, 1982, Whitefish Island was deemed a National Historical Site by Canada by "virtue of its historic remains."
