Description |
English: On July 27, 1696 a live albino squirrel was brought to Charles XI. The king was amused by the unusual animal and commissioned his court painter to paint it. Ehrenstrahl’s animal paintings often reflect the fascination of his times with the exotic or unusual—parrots and polar bears are interspersed with giant moose or malformed dogs. Thus not only royalty was eternalized by Ehrenstrahl’s brush. And so we now have this curious squirrel with its white coat and red eyes, eternally nibbling on a nut. |
