Transcript InfoField | The Drawbridge. The popular seaside resort of Whitby, situated at the mouth of the River Esk, consists of two distinct parts, the old quarters of the town on the East Cliff (where are situated the houses of the fishermen and jet-workers), and the more modern and fashionable district which has sprung up of recent years on the West Cliff. Communication between the two parts is facilitated by means of a bridge, the second arch of which is con-structed on the drawbridge principle in order to allow of the passage of vessels. |
