Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Whitby Harbour and Beach from West Cliff The very outer harbour at Whitby is protected by two extended piers, West Pier and East Pier, which reach out North, into the North Sea, from the left of the picture. The beginning of East pier can be seen at the base of the cliff and St Hilda's church and the abbey ruins are on the cliff top. The outer harbour seen here is the mouth of the River Esk and the construction of the piers with a narrow entrance is designed to speed up the river flow into deeper water offshore, to minimise river sediment deposition at this point and the amount off dredging that is required to keep the harbour navigable.
