Summary
[edit]DescriptionWhistlingDickatVicksburg1863.jpg |
English: "Whistling Dick" was the name given to this specific Confederate 18-pounder because of the peculiar noise made by its projectiles. It was part of the defensive batteries facing the Mississippi River at Vicksburg. On May 28 1863, its fire sank the USS Cincinnati. This error in the name of this gun has gone on for years. The true name of the gun is the "Widow Blakely". Whistling Dick was sunk in the river along with her ammunition the night before the surrender. The Widow Blakely is in battery just north of the bridges not far from where she was during the siege. It is one of only 2 guns known to have been in the siege. The other gun is also a naval gun located at the intersection of Washington St. and China St. This gun is a 9 inch Confederate Dahlgren. |
