Description

Sandstones in the Silurian of Ontario, Canada.

The Whirlpool Sandstone is a fluvial to very shallow marine unit of Early Silurian age. During high flow (= natural flow), these ledges are usually covered with water. The Canadians have been diverting water from above Niagara Falls (= upstream from this site) for a long time.

Stratigraphy: Whirlpool Sandstone, lower Medina Group, lower Rhuddanian Stage, lower Llandoverian Series, lower Lower Silurian

Locality: riverside outcrops along the southeastern banks of the Niagara River (as seen from Whirlpool Point), immediately downstream from The Whirlpool, American side of the river, far-western New York State, USA
