Text Appearing Before Image:
^ He sniffed the breeze, like ananimal that detects the coming storm and fleesbefore it. He put out one hand and accu-rately timed the wind. He cast his browlesseyes upward where not a patch of blue was tobe seen. Far out over the waters, he heardthe mad roar of the tide and the oncomingstorm. Great drops began to fall—one, two, thencountless others. The heavens themselvesseemed rent asunder, wliile flashes of light-ning gave glimpses of the brightness be-yond. The thunder roared like the onwardmarch of heavy cavalry. The lighteningbecame more intense, terrible and blinding.

He fell to and bailed out thewater as fast as he could. He looked eagerlytoward the boat beliind that was laden with thecargo so dear to him. It was heavy and strong, and the cargo safe, for it was riding the waveslike a bird, while the smaller and lighter boat, though riding equally as well, was tossedabout like a cork. I dared not leave off from the oars a mo-ment to assist in bailing out the water that wasgradually rising about our legs. The pirateredoubled his energies and worked as for life;and for life it was. The canvas-covered boatbehind us held nothing but dead cargo, andheld it well. Like a black bird, it rose andfell with each wave as complacently as thoughthe sea were calm and the sky blue. I was almost faint from thirst, and, as thefirst large drops of rain fell, I opened mymouth wide and drank them in like a chick.Gre
