Row ; moderatein size and plain in finish, with nothing 70 Where Ghosts Walk to commend it to our notice except thefact that for two-and-thirty years it houseda Genius, and was kept by his much-enduring wife. By-and-by, as fame increased, and thefamily purse was heavier, importantchanges were made in the room abovethe humble parlour. Up to now ithad been Carlyles study. The FrenchRevolution^ Cromwell, Latter-Day Tracts^and many of his lectures were writtenhere. In 1852 was begun the workof an enlargement of it into a kindof Drawing-room according to modernideas, as Carlyle put it. Jane meantit for a library, where he could continueto write, yet where visitors might bereceived in a style somewhat suitableto their rising fortunes. But the nest was stirred. The excel-lent, large, wholesome apartment, in size19 by 18 feet, in which, Carlyle tellshis brother, he is trying to work, wassoon condemned as untenantable. Muchhumouring of his moods and tenses hadmade him more notional than ever.
Text Appearing After Image:
No. 24 Cheyne Row 71 For three days his satisfaction overthe rehabilitated house lasted; on thefourth the young lady next door took afit of practising upon her accursed piano-forte, and he started up, disenchanted,in his new library and informed heavenand earth in a peremptory manner thatthere he could neither think nor live, that the carpenter must be brought back, and steps taken to make him a quiet placeanywhere—perhaps, best of all, on theroof of the house. The volcanic upheaval gave Jane thelong-sighed-for drawing-room. Therewere portraits upon the walls, presentedby noble friends, Albert Diirer engrav-ings, and rare prints; two pier-glasseswere between the windows, and a squaremirror was over the mantel. Sofas andchairs were grouped with tables and piano ;a Bramah grate was set in blue tiles ; burn-ers superseded lamps, and gold-platedcandlesticks, silver and green lacqueredbronze statuettes, made a show that ex-cited the envy of plainer neighbours, Mrs.Carlyle was justly proud
