Stop the War

Parliament Square October 2007

It is the way he arrives that heats my heart and makes

Me smile

I hear him first

tap tap

tapping

the ground with his stick

down wind away from me and all security

Beyond convention

on common parts sound enough to make me turn around

as he shuffles

by

dragging his wheelie cart stuffed full with placards

and quiet ideals

Made at home in England

just like him and just like me

I'll know his name later

but for now

Praise be

We are in front of parliament the marchers are like sheep

behind barriers, tunneled, funneled, shepherds in blue the old bill, as always,

will

Guard the wrong man

We are

All close to Mr Churchill a king

our old knight who also once rode an ocean to make us free

Winston

now in stony silence on his plinth

holds his own untapping cane

and closer still is sir Brian Haw as yet

untapped who bellows out from beside his

weather beaten battered tattered old shack

Camelot is policed and ring fenced once again

Meanwhile

On the other side of the road

Our friend stands

Arthur with his banner in the air

In his hand

Proud

fearlessly calls to the caged to escape and join him in the street

He roars a lion with laughter having outflanked the police emerging from the underground a station Westminster bound on the District line that will soon take him home

to shuffle by happy happenstance into this democratic space

a small victory with a cardboard lance held aloft

To protest

and oh the joy

The police bemused embarrassed know not what to do with a bruised and battered old man and his signs

(lay a finger on him the crowd priests included and I will explode)

To protect this man

with a bruised and battered flag held proudly up high in his hand

Yet

I see this too in their constabled uniformed red white and blue faces

he is their dad a father a grand father who fought a battle against u boats

and so they know their history its outcome their debt

He is let alone

and I'll be damned if I don't see Winnie lift his stick

and

smile in salute to liberty deep beneath his

grey dead unbeaten dark dead yet living grit

I learn some what later my friend's name is Richard. A survivor of the second world war. Formerly Merchant Navy. A brave man then and now. The first man to have a permit to protest in parliament square. (Brian Haw has the order of a high court judge) Richard presented himself from time to time to collect his licence from a local police station before it went. Mondays 12 to 2. He has a spot under Big Ben to make his case against the slaughter. He is gone by the stroke of the third hour. He does not abuse the liberty he has won. Always with laughter. I like him a lot

UPDATE: I cry most times I re read this and that makes me happy
