English: An elaborate Wheel of Fortune allegory. Fortuna's wheel is turned by Time, while Death takes the figure at the bottom of the wheel. A ranks of mankind, including the pope and other religious figures as well as nobles and others, lies fallen beneath the wheel. Sardanapalus, the self-indulgent symbol of those who revel in Fortune's favor, is shown afflicted with grosse verole (syphilis) who appears to be Time's wife, and condemned to work, women's work with distaff and spindle. |
