Very little is definitely known of the earlylife of Correggio (1494?-1534), except thathe was born in the town that gave him hisname, about 1494. Numberless curious leg-ends and stories have arisen from time to timeabout this original painter, for original he cer-tainly was, but it is doubtful if Antonio Al-legri, or Correggio as we know him, would rec-ognize any of them. The one thing we doknow is that he was a painter par excellenceand that his pictures express the living, phys-ical beauty of humanity to the very acme ofsensuous pleasure.
