Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Wharf Bridge, Aldermaston, Kennet and Avon Navigation Aldermaston Bridge was at this time, and for many years, a serious obstacle to restoration of through navigation on the Kennet and Avon. It carried the A340, viewed as a road of strategic importance, and both the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Defence were adamant that this road could not be closed to permit the rebuilding of the bridge. 'Authority' viewed the canal restorers, many of whom wore beards or were otherwise of unconventional appearance, as little different from the anti-nuclear protesters who had already caused much trouble in the area. It was not until the retirement of one particularly obdurate senior civil servant in the M.o.D. that wiser councils prevailed and restoration was finally allowed to begin.
