Text (original)

Text (English translation)

On March 30, 1545, an orca stranded in the Greifswalder Bodden near Greifswald. The find of this vagrant caused great consernation at the time and was seen as an omen by God.

With the wall image, the rare event was documented. The whale was pictured here in its original size and it is even possible to recognize from the long dorsal fin that it was a male animal.

From this find, Konrad Gessner first scientifically described the orca, which is also known as the killer whale, in 1558 in his famous "Fish Book".

This wall image is an extremely rare and valuable image of a whale, which was restored in 1990 by Mr. Joachim-Paul Gürke.
