English: Whale bones near Skipi Geo From a distance, this looked like a sculpture of a bird. It is a whale vertebra mounted on what is probably a rib.
Compare this picture from 1982 with one taken 25 years later, where the vertebra has been reattached higher up its post https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/488703 . These bones are remarkably durable, said to have been erected in about 1876 from the remains of a beached whale http://www.birsay.org.uk/scenicwalks.htm . |
