English: Wet grassland on the edge of Hollands Wood, New Forest This gate provides access to the open woodland to the east of the A337 road, opposite the entrance to New Park. The sign on the gate, headed 'Sustainable wetland restoration', reads... Wet grasslands are an important part of the forest landscape providing rich grazing for commoning stock and supporting unique and rare species of plants. Drainage and straightening of the natural river courses has reduced vital seasonal flooding of these areas. This has resulted in them becoming drier, nutrient poorer and subject to invasion by scrub with the subsequent loss of vital grazing land. Work to start the restoration process will include removal of birch, removal of scrub, removal of spoil banks, adjustment of drainage channels [and] river restoration work (Environment Agency). |
