Summary

[edit]
Description

c/n WA.243. Built 1965. Arrived at Duxford in 1981 and I seem to remember that she was painted overall red and white at the time. She has since been restored to original colours and is now on display in the ‘AirSpace’ hangar at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford Airfield, Cambridgeshire, UK. 26th January 2018

The following history for XS863 comes from the IWM website:-

“Our Wessex entered service in 1965, and flew from HMS Ark Royal and Singapore, and also played a role in one of the more interesting and complex examples of a decolonisation-related operations – blockading Southern Rhodesia as part of the ‘Beira’ missions. Its last overseas commission, aboard HMS Hermes, saw it take part in ‘dissident hunting operations’ from Habilayn and – though further research is needed to confirm that this was one of the aircraft used – in anti-communist operations during the Hong Kong riots of that year. It last flew on 8 December 1980.”
