35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Aves; Order: Squamata; Family: Colubridae; Genus: Salvadora; Genus species: Salvadora hexalepis. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 107 cm; Identification: The western patch-nosed snake has a large rostral scale on the tip of its nose, a yellowish stripe with darker borders down the center of its back, and one dark stripe down each side. The underbelly is a paler color; Habitat: Lowland deserts, bush flats, desert scrub, grasslands, lower mountain slopes, woodlands; Diet: Carnivore: lizards, grasshoppers, small mammals, reptile eggs; Reproduction: Each female lays 4-10 eggs during the summer; Behavior: Although the western patch-nosed snake is not a constrictive species, it will still loop around its prey to subdue it. In cooler climates, western patch-nosed snakes are active from April to November; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: The enlarged scale on the nose is used for burrowing.
