onsiderable fervor, the air in the tent wasgetting stuffy, and I was getting prettydrowsy. While thus half asleep, holding thespear in one hand and with the other hold-ing the decoy which dangled listlessly in thewater below me, all at once I saw a re-flection at the edge of the ice. Then a widerounded snout came slowly into view. Itwas followed by a broad head with gleamingeyes. Then came the thick rounded neckand opening gills and trembling pectoralfins. How sinister the monster looked as heglared at the decoy! How bright were hissilvery spots! I actually gasped for breath.My hair seemed to stand on end. In despera-tion I worked the decoy away from thistyrant of fresh water lakes, to lure himwithin range of the spear. He followed likea phantom. And when his graceful formwas stretched out beneath me, with a heavythrust I plunged the spear into his back.Letting go the spear, I seized the small ropewhich was tied to the end of its iron handle.Then I tipped the tent off from over me and

10 WESTERN FIELD was ready to land my prize. The pickerelfought hard for its life. Round and roundit went under the ice and darted here andthere, completely roiling the water. Butafter a royal struggle it gave up in exhaus-tion and I hauled it out upon the ice. I shouted to Art. His head popped out ofhis tent and I invited him to be sociableand come over. He lost no time in accept-ing my invitation, and soon he came splash-ing through the water, bringing his tentalong with him. When he caught sight ofmy lusty pickerel, Nature asserted itself andhe let out a war-whoop which must havecracked the ice for rods around. Good lucksharpened our appetites and the basket oflunch met swift and terrible justice. Art.then proceeded to erect his tent within thirtyfeet of mine, in the outlet. Soon all wasquiet, save the strange noises one will hearwhile thus sitting in a tent on the ice—noises made by the cracking of the ice as itheaves or settles while freezing or thawing.
