THE PACIFIC COAST MAGAZINE 177 on my lips and I sprang to my feet in aston-ishment. There, under the mimosa before men-tioned, was a struggling, writhing, scream-ing zebra with a half-grown lioness on hishack, and for a full minute I was practicallyincapable of movement, so paralyzed was Iwith surprise. Then, as the ruling passionpossessed me, I began snapping my cameraat the frantically twisting medley of black,white and orange—foolishly wasting filmafter film in the vain attempt to get themin the field of the lens. Fortunately I re-covered my wits in time to reserve two ex-posures for a more auspicious moment, andwas rewarded by seeing the doomed zebrastiffen suddenly into an almost statue-likerigor as the merciless teeth crushed paralyz-ingly through the spinal cord in its neck.Instinctively I snapped the two remainingexposures, jumping deliberately to one sideto get a broadside view, and the result istwo negatives that will be unequalled, Ithink, in the world, if they come out a
