I stopped short, rapidlyreloaded, fired two more bullets behind theshoulder of the bear, and laid him dead al-most at our feet. An inspection of the surroundings showedthe half-eaten carcass of an old elk behindthe fallen tree in the center of the openpark. We had disturbed an old grizzly athis dinner and had aroused his temper. Thisexplained the sudden and savage nature ofhis charge. We took the skin and skull ofour fallen foe and then went in search of thebear first seen, but failed to find him. Wethen returned and found and killed yet an-other bear eating remains of the elk alreadymentioned. This bear bolted ingloriouslyfor the timber and was shot in the process.Then we went back to camp. The laugharound the campfire that night was onme —very decidedly. Three days later we began to think of re- an old king bear.

It was near the endof September, and the weather was threaten-ing, A snowstorm had kept us in camp for acouple of days and we had built a wicky-up or Indian tent with young fir trees andboughs. On the third day the weathercleared, and that evening some of our partybrought the news that much rifle shootinghad been heard on the east side of the range.We noticed that our guides were distinctlyuneasy during that night and a good dealwas said about Indians. Next day Jack andI went out to investigate in the direction inwhich the shots had been heard. We foundthe carcass of a freshly killed buffalo—alsonumerous horse tracks crossing the rangefrom east to west. These tracks. Jack as-serted, were those of Indians on the war-path, first because no party of white menwould be at all likely to travel in such num-bers; secondly, because the horses were un-shod.
