These villages are afew huts of the most primitive architecture;small sticks are stuck into the ground andbent together at the top. afterward beingthatched with leaves and grass. These hutsare seldom more than six feet in diameter byfive feet high; at a hundred yards distancethey resemble small hay-cocks more than thedwelings of men; each of these huts, how-ever, shelters from two to ten people, andcould furnish a good example of sleepingseven in a bed and one in the middle. When speaking of the appearance of a vil-lage at a hundred yards resembling hay-cocks, it is only to give the reader an idea ofits primitive character, for jn reality nearlyall villages are so situated that it would bealmost impossible to see them until closeenough to reach forth and touch the huts.Occasionally villages are in more open forest,but only in a practically uninhabited portionof the country where all fear of intrusion islulled by the knowledge of long dista
