Black squirrels and grey ones made heretheir homes, in numbers th^t would be quitesurprising to those who know them onlyin these latter days of civilization, when theylive mainly in the heavier woods and could 322 MlJSTEHN FIELD hardly exist in such light and open coveras that of the oak openings. Yet forty yearsago there was scarcely a tree without oneof their nests, hardly a day when the sharp squit-s quits quit could not be heard inany direction, while down almost any avenueof green the bushy tail might be seen whisk-ing over the grass, and on cold winter daysmight be seen outstretched on some big limbwhere its owner was taking his noondaybath.
