d of thisfamily; so do cou-gars, coyotes andwolverines; but theavalanche is thegoats arch enemy.Follow the trailof a wise old griz-zly, fresh from hiswinters den. Un-like his more youth-ful brethren and hiscousin, the blackbear, he does not atonce hie to the lowbare foothills insearch of roots andearly growingplants. Instead, youwill find him prowl-ing along the base ofthe mountains, where during wintermany a snowslidehas crashed down, carrying with itrocks, brush, trees, and often a goat ortwo. Even thoughburied twenty feet and more below the surface. Old Ephriam al-ways scents the goats and, tunneling down, quickly drags them out and regally feastsupon them. Again, the goat hunter fre-quently finds that several ribs of his quarry—yes, and sometimes even a leg—have oncebeen broken, more than likely by a snow orrockslide. So absolutely sure-footed arethese strange animals that it seems impos-sible they ever slip and fall, even in theextremely hazardous places they are wontto traverse.

Pilot from Iaintiiis: by C. Rungius in Anieiican Sportsmens LibraryPART OF OUR FLOCK. Another thing we soon learned was thatwhile two bands of nannies and kids willmeet and keep on feeding, or lie down sideby side without paying the slightest atten-tion to one another, such an incident is anaffair of ceremony in the case of two bandsof billy goats. One day we were idly watch-ing five billies that were located in a littlebasin part way up the mountain; they werelying down most of the time, but occasion-ally one would arise, stretch himself andstroll about, picking a bite here and there.Seeing an especially tempting bunch of lichens hugh up onthe wall rock, hewould deliberatelystand on his hindlegs in his attemptto reach it. Oncewe saw a band offive ascend to an-other ledge by plac-ing their forefeetupon it and draw-ing themselves up,just as a man wouldin a place of likecharacter. While watchingthese goats, fourmore billies camein sight wendingtheir way in singlefile down into thebasin.
