Instead, youwill find him prowl-ing along the base ofthe mountains,where during wintermany a snowslidehas crashed down,carrying with itrocks, brush, trees,and often a goat ortwo. Even thoughburied twenty feet and more below the surface. Old Ephriam al-ways scents the goats and, tunneling down,quickly drags them out and regally feastsupon them. Again, the goat hunter fre-quently finds that several ribs of his quarry—yes, and sometimes even a leg—have oncebeen broken, more than likely by a snow orrockslide. So absolutely sure-footed arethese strange animals that it seems impos-sible they ever slip and fall, even in theextremely hazardous places they are wontto traverse.
