| Description |
English: Westbury Station. As the last of the afternoon sunshine fades, a view looking southwest to Westbury Station from the overbridge carrying the B3097 over the railway. A rake of empty stone hoppers can be seen at left, on their way back to one of the Mendip stone quarries, either Merehead or Whatley. At right can be seen the vehicles and sheds of the Brook Lane vehicle auction site.
The station is at the Ham, nearly a mile from the town centre. It opened in 1848 when the rail line reached Westbury via Trowbridge form Thingley Junction near Chippenham, on the main London- Bristol line. The track running westwards towards Frome was opened in 1850 as the first section of the route from Westbury to Weymouth. The first section of the line south through Warminster to Salisbury was opened in the following year. |
