Summary

[edit]
Description The history of this building on the left, "The College" as it is called, is too complicated to put here. It was originally built to house a Dean and five Canons (ecclesiastical ones). The large tower used to house the gatehouse/entrance and the real floor level is about 15 feet below. There was an archaeological dig here in 1968 before Westminster Court flats were built. I don't think that any report on that dig has yet been published. It was a rescue dig done before the Georgian building (which occupied the site to the left of this photo) was demolished. It is possible that part of this site showed signs of iron age occupation.
