Description
English: Monument to Sir James Ley d.1629. and his first wife Mary. At the top are the four cardinal virtues: Prudence, Justice, Fortitude, and Temperance. (one missing?).

He was Chief Justice of the King's Bench and Lord High Treasurer of England. The couple had 11 children. His second wife was Mary Bowyer, and his third Jane Butler, they had no issue. The Earl's third marriage is said to have caused bitter family quarrels. He lived to a good age and died a peaceful death. Ley was a founder member of the Society of Antiquaries. He was remembered as a poor statesman but an able and impartial judge.
