Description

Scope and content: This file unit consists of correspondence related to West Quoddy Light in Lubec, Maine received by Benjamin Lincoln, Henry Dearborn, and Henry A. S. Dearborn in their capacity as Superintendents of Massachusetts Lighthouses. Included are letters related to land acquisition and construction proposals for the lighthouse, the appointment of lighthouse keepers, and expenses for supplies and repairs. Included are correspondence from Treasury Secretary Albert Gallatin, Passamaquoddy Customs Collector Lewis Frederick Delesdernier, and Lighthouse Keeper Thomas Dexter. Of note are several detailed drawings of West Passamaquoddy, including a “plan of West Passamaquoddy compiled from actual survey-exhibiting a plot to be appropriated for establishment of a light house,” dated June 24, 1806.
