Summary

[edit]
Description

The green "anti-ice" fluid is type IV fluid, designed to protect the critical surfaces of the aircraft from contamination (accumulating snow in this case). It is applied cold, is thick, and "breaks away" from the aircraft at around 100 knots during the takeoff roll. It works very good, protecting the aircraft up to 75 minutes under these conditions. Type I is the other fluid you always see in Canada. It is orange in colour and applied hot (at least 60C/140F). Type I is viscous and primarily a de-ice fluid, for removing snow and ice from the airplane. However, it does provide respectable anti-ice qualities. In these conditions it would last up to 18 minutes. If they are used together, type I is always applied first.

The winds this day were strong out of the east. So much so that shooting the ILS onto runway 25 was not an option. We almost didn't make it in on the backcourse for 07 as the visibility was poor. We saw the lead in lights for runway at the last moment before we would have had to start our missed approach procedure.
