e west end, which tradition asserts was placed there so that lepersor persons suffering from infectious disorders should ina measure be able to take part in the service. Thegreat hall, which is placed at the south-west angle ofthe chapel, was also the work of Bishop Burnell. Itwas dismantled in 1552 by Sir John Gates, who, afterthe execution of the Duke of Somerset, purchased thepalace for the sake of the materials. It may be someconsolation to the antiquary to know that the vandalGates was beheaded a year later for plotting to placeLady Jane Grey on the throne. It was in thisbeautiful hall that the mock trial of Whiting, the lastAbbot of Glastonbury, already referred to, had takenplace some thirteen years earlier. The ruin of thisportion of the palace was completed after the Civil Warby one Dr Cornelius Burgess, to whom the building, deanery, and chapter-house, together with much otherChurch property in the town, had been sold for anominal price by the Parliament. 160 THK PALACE, WELLS
Text Appearing After Image:
The Deanery From these ruins it is pleasant to turn to thesouthern side of the palace enclosure, where lies anexquisite garden rich with flowers, whose bright andvaried colours present at all seasons save winter sucha pleasing contrast to the grey ruins of the ancient halland the old-time walls of the houses. Few more exquisite scenes are to be found in thewhole of Wessex than this lovely garden, with itsterrace walk along the embatded wall, and its beautifulviews of the cathedral and the hills which surroundthe city. Here is just such a spot as in mediaevaldays drew to it much that was best, most artistic, andmost learned from the greater world without. Across the Cathedral Green lies the deanery, prominent with its octagonal turrets and embatdedparapet, the work of Dean Gunthorne, who filled theoffices of chaplain to Edward IV., Lord Keeper of thePrivy Seal, and several other high positions, from1472 to 1498. This fine building, although, it is true,a good deal spoiled by modern wind
