Notes | The inscription speaks of the ninth official rank, however, the man bears the insignia (buzi) of the seventh rank (Mandarin duck). By the end of the seventeenth century, all rank birds since the Kangxi emperor’s reign (1662-1722), were depicted looking at a sun disk, said to represent the emperor. Mandarin duck was a symbol of marital fidelity and thus loyalty, a noble quality in a government official. Immediately above the image is a horizontal inscription strip containing an imperial order concerning the appointment of Xi Shizuan (?) to the ninth rank official post in the Shandong province. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
