Arms of an Earl of Stafford (?). With supporters and crest of the Bohun Swan, an heraldic badge used by the Stafford family. However this is a baroque (17th century) style escutcheon whereas the last of the Stafford Earls of Stafford was Edward Stafford, 9th Baron Stafford, 8th Earl of Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham (1477–1521). Latin motto: Palma Pondere Viget (La palma invigorisce col peso, the palm gains vigour from weight); listed by Gaspar Scioppius (Caspar Schoppe) 1639 without context[1]. No original literary source given by Schoppe. |
