Summary
[edit]DescriptionWelwyn Garden City, Former Shredded Wheat Factory (1) - geograph.org.uk - 4246903.jpg |
English: Welwyn Garden City: Former Shredded Wheat Factory (1) The factory was originally built with its range of massive concrete silos to the designs of Louis de Soissons with cereal production commencing in 1926. The factory lasted in use for 82 years before it was closed in 2008. Please see John's TL2412 : The "Shredded Wheat" factory, Welwyn Garden City for a view from 2007 when it was still functioning. Traces of the red Shredded Wheat name can still be seen on the yellow wall. Despite John's note that it was to be demolished almost all of the factory is still standing in 2014. Since it is a Grade II Listed structure any redevelopment of the site is going to be difficult. For those interested in the Ordnance Survey's mapping there was, or indeed might still be, a bolt in the roof above the silos, that, given its great height and wide-ranging views, served as a triangulation station in the same way as the more familiar pillars found on hilltops. |
