Summary

[edit]
Description

Welsh poppy (Meconopsis cambrica, or Papaver cambricum) in North Yorkshire, England, where it is an introduced plant. In gardens in the centre of Harrogate, orange Welsh poppies grow wild and plentiful - but few yellow ones. On the outskirts of Harrogate, almost all wild Welsh poppies in gardens are yellow. Some gardeners encourage or permit them to grow, some do not.

Around 2010, I brought an orange poppy to Harrogate's outskirts and planted it among some yellow ones. In following seasons, no new orange plants appeared, but a few yellow poppies with orange markings have appeared in most years. This year, one fully orange poppy is growing among the yellow poppy plants.

Showing a yellow poppy flower. This one has some orange colouring at the base of the petals.
