English: Welsh Road Lock near Bascote, Warwickshire This is lock No 18 on the present Grand Union Canal, an amalgamation of at least eight earlier canals in 1929. Soon after the formation of the Grand Union in 1929, the narrow locks were replaced with wide locks such as this one, capable of accommodating two full length narrowboats side by side.
This part of the system was originally built as the Warwick and Napton Junction Canal and opened in December 1799. |
