Summary
[edit]DescriptionWelcome to Shrewsbury - geograph.org.uk - 727262.jpg |
English: Welcome to Shrewsbury A very modern mediaeval town; traffic chaos, expensive parking, all the usual chain stores & loads of wonderful pubs. Yes, welcome to Shrewsbury (or as it used to be spelt: Shroesbury which may give you a hint as to its pronunciation). The town's name has also been spelt, Scropesbyrig or Scrobbesbyrig; which I understand to be Anglo-Saxon English (the language we used to use before we spoke American) for a fortified place of a person named Scrobb. In some ways I'm glad we no longer use that term as anyone from the town could possibly be called a Scrobber. |
