| Description |
Welcome to Coiba National Park! Coiba is a UNESCO World Heritage site, on account of it's rich biodiversity and uniquely evolved species. The park includes Isla Coiba (Coiba Island) and a vast area of the surrounding waters and islets. During the days of Manuel Noriega, a prison was located on this island. You have to put your political prisoners somewhere, after all. Consequently, boat and human traffic was extremely restricted, allowing the natural environment to remain relatively pure and undisturbed. After Noriega was deposed, the natural environment was maintained, as the site was declared a national park by the Panamanian government. The prison still exists, in ruins, on a remote part of the island. The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute is located within the park, on a small island immediately off the coast of Isla Coiba and a newly created visitor's center on Isla Coiba (actually finished during my visit) now tells the story of the island. |
